In Edgecombe County, N.C., a former employee of the county jail has been arrested after an internal investigation revealed she was involved in a romantic relationship with an inmate and was found distributing contraband. Taquita Bryant, a medical contractor at the jail, was terminated from her position following the investigation conducted by the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say that Bryant’s actions, which included providing contraband to the inmate, posed significant safety risks within the facility. The sheriff’s office expressed strong disapproval of Bryant’s behavior, stating that it was deeply disheartening for an employee to commit crimes that endangered others and were driven by personal gain.
As a result of her actions, Bryant faces multiple charges, including providing a phone or electronic device to an inmate, distributing contraband to an inmate, and supplying tobacco and vapor products to inmates within the jail. Deputies arrested Bryant, and she was placed in jail at the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office under a secured bond of $250,000.
The sheriff’s office’s statement emphasized the gravity of the situation, underscoring the significant safety risks posed by such actions within the correctional facility. Bryant’s arrest serves as a reminder of the serious consequences faced by individuals who violate the trust and responsibilities placed on them in positions of authority and care within correctional institutions.
