In a tense moment for global security, Russia has warned Donald Trump’s incoming administration about the possibility of resuming nuclear tests. Russia’s top arms control expert, Sergei Ryabkov, expressed concerns that Washington’s approach, which he called “extremely hostile,” could spark dangerous actions.

Imagine it – two of the world’s most powerful countries, Russia and the United States, conducting nuclear tests again after nearly three decades of a testing moratorium. It would mark a dramatic shift since the first-ever nuclear test in 1945, setting the stage for a risky new era.

Both Russia and the U.S. are modernizing their nuclear arsenals, while Cold War-era arms control agreements are falling apart. This has raised alarms about the future of peace, especially with countries like China also ramping up their nuclear capabilities.

Ryabkov hinted that Russia might consider resuming nuclear tests if the U.S. did, saying, “We’re keeping our options open.” The last major tests were decades ago, with the U.S. last testing in 1992, and Russia’s final test being in 1990. Still, the looming possibility of testing has many experts worried.

So, what’s at stake? Resuming nuclear testing could escalate tensions even further. With over 88% of the world’s nuclear weapons controlled by the U.S. and Russia, the pressure to act responsibly is more critical than ever. The world’s eyes are on these two superpowers – will they push for peace or play a dangerous game?
