Kinston police have recovered a stolen heating and air conditioning unit that was taken from the Scouting America office on Boy Scout Boulevard. Authorities responded to a theft report on Friday, where they obtained a description of the suspect and the vehicle involved.
During the investigation, officers identified the vehicle matching the suspect’s description and later secured a search warrant for the home of 39-year-old Al Gilchrist of Kinston. Upon searching the residence, officers located the stolen HVAC unit, confirming it was the one reported missing from the Scouts’ facility.
Following the discovery, Gilchrist was arrested and charged with felony conspiracy, felony larceny, possession of stolen property, and injury to real property. These charges reflect the severity of the crime, as felony larceny involves the unlawful taking of another’s property with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of its use. Possession of stolen property further indicates that Gilchrist knowingly had the stolen HVAC unit in his possession.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether additional individuals were involved in the theft or if Gilchrist acted alone. Investigators are working to determine the full scope of the incident, including how the unit was stolen and transported. The Scouting America office, like many organizations, relies on properly functioning HVAC systems for climate control, and thefts of such equipment can cause significant disruptions.
Police have urged anyone with further information to come forward and assist in the investigation. Stolen HVAC units are often stripped for valuable materials such as copper and aluminum, which can be sold illegally. Law enforcement continues to monitor cases like these, as they are often linked to broader theft rings targeting businesses and organizations.
The Kinston Police Department remains committed to addressing property crimes in the community and ensuring that stolen property is returned to its rightful owners. Officials encourage residents and businesses to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may help prevent future incidents.
