Craven County Jail Escapee John Nigh Recaptured After Two Weeks on the Run
Pamlico County, N.C. – Authorities have recaptured John Nigh, an escapee from the Craven County Jail, after he was on the run for two weeks. Pamlico County Sheriff Chris Davis confirmed the arrest, sharing a photo with Nigh on Facebook after his capture.
According to Craven County deputies, Nigh was apprehended at approximately 4:30 p.m. by Pamlico County deputies. Sheriff Davis posted a selfie with the captured fugitive, stating, “Safe and secure! Full disclosure for all you Facebook warriors…John and I had a good conversation during his arrest, he even asked if he could smile for a picture and also said he wanted everyone to know he was safe. You’re welcome.”
The Facebook post received mixed reactions. Many praised the efforts of law enforcement, with one commenter stating, “Awesome job PCSO, that’s how you get it done.” However, others questioned the professionalism of sharing such a photo, with one user commenting, “Great job! But not very professional posting it like this.”
Nigh escaped from the Craven County Jail on January 26th. Authorities say he and several cellmates removed ceiling grating, accessed a utility ceiling chase, and climbed onto the roof using ventilation housing. His escape led to a two-week search effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Prior to his escape, Nigh had been incarcerated following his arrest in Onslow County last summer. Officials say he fired two shots at three deputies attempting to arrest him at a residence in the Hubert area.
Craven County deputies have announced they will provide further details regarding Nigh’s capture in a press conference scheduled for tomorrow morning.
