Eastern Carolina Man Arrested on Gun, Drug, and Sex Offender Charges
A Pitt County man is in custody following an investigation by the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office into allegations of gun possession, drug violations, and noncompliance with sex offender registry laws.
The investigation began after deputies received a tip about a registered sex offender potentially living near a school, which would violate state residency restrictions. The Sheriff’s Office Sex Offender Investigation Unit, along with detectives from the Gang and Gun Crimes Unit, obtained search and arrest warrants for Abdul Al-Amin, who was officially registered as residing on Cedar Creek Road.
Last Friday, deputies observed Al-Amin at a residence on Allendale Drive. When officers approached, Al-Amin attempted to evade arrest by locking the front door and later trying to escape through the back door. He was apprehended during the escape attempt.
A search of the Allendale Drive residence confirmed that Al-Amin had been living there instead of at his registered address. This residence was within 1,000 feet of Greenville Christian Academy and Koinonia Kaleidoscope Child Care Center, a violation of state laws regulating where registered sex offenders may live.
Additionally, authorities discovered a firearm and a small amount of marijuana in the home. As a convicted felon, Al-Amin is prohibited from possessing firearms.
Al-Amin now faces multiple charges, including failing to register as a sex offender, two counts of sex offender residency violations, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of up to half an ounce of marijuana. He is being held at the Pitt County Jail under a $201,000 secured bond.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of the community in reporting concerns that can lead to investigations like this one. This case highlights ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with sex offender registry laws and prevent violations in sensitive areas near schools and childcare centers.
