Karate Instructor Charged with Sexual Assault of Minor at Texas Dojo
A 30-year-old karate instructor, William Propper, is facing serious allegations after being charged with the sexual assault of a minor at a karate camp in Sugar Land, Texas. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, Propper allegedly raped a 13- or 14-year-old boy at the Safety America Karate school, where he worked as an instructor. The incident reportedly occurred during a summer camp in 2022 or 2023.
The case came to light on January 31, 2024, when the victim’s mother contacted the Sugar Land Police Department. She informed authorities that her son had disclosed the assault, which allegedly took place in a staff bathroom at the karate school. The boy, who had been a student at the dojo since 2018, recounted the traumatic experience during a forensic interview. He stated that Propper had offered to “try out sex” and told him he was “mature enough” to engage in sexual activity. After the alleged assault, Propper reportedly instructed the boy to keep the incident a secret.
Propper was arrested on February 1 and released on a $75,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 17, though the case has not yet been submitted to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office for review.
In response to the allegations, Safety America Karate issued a statement through their attorney, confirming that the accused employee has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The school emphasized that classes would continue as normal and requested understanding from the community during this challenging time.
This case has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about child safety in youth programs. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation continues. The incident underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability in environments where children are entrusted to the care of adults.
