A heartbreaking incident in La Porte County has left a two-year-old injured after being struck by a vehicle driven by an allegedly intoxicated man who then fled the scene.
The shocking event occurred on March 22 when Eric Levine, whose license was suspended at the time, visited a friend’s home on Grove Street to repair his Dodge Journey. According to authorities, once the alternator was fixed, Levine attempted to leave but tragically hit the toddler in the driveway while backing out.
The child’s parents, in a state of panic, immediately rushed to provide aid. Meanwhile, Levine, instead of staying to help, allegedly drove away without informing them. When later questioned by police, Levine claimed that his friend had instructed him to leave after the accident. However, his friend denied these claims, stating that Levine fled while they were tending to the injured child.
Authorities later located Levine and conducted a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluation. The evaluation revealed several signs of impairment, including swaying, slow movements, droopy eyelids, and an elevated heart rate—consistent with intoxication.
Levine has been arrested and is now facing serious charges, including:
- Leaving the scene of an accident after operating while intoxicated
- Causing serious bodily injury while driving under the influence
- Driving with a suspended license resulting in bodily injury
He is currently being held on a $25,000 bond.
This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of drunk driving. Authorities urge drivers to act responsibly and consider the devastating consequences reckless actions can have on innocent lives.
