A chaotic crime spree unfolded in Cook County, Illinois, on Wednesday when a suspect stole a Bedford Park police squad car, hijacked a U.S. Postal Service truck, and crashed into a mother and her two young children.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 36-year-old Miguel Alvarado, who now faces multiple charges, including aggravated possession of a stolen vehicle and two counts of aggravated reckless driving. Police say additional charges are expected from other jurisdictions involved.
The mayhem began around 2:45 p.m. when Bedford Park officers were responding to a call near 6800 South Archer Road. While on scene, Alvarado managed to steal a squad car and flee. The abandoned vehicle was later discovered near 97th Place and Avon Avenue in Chicago Ridge.
But the chaos didn’t end there. According to Bridgeview police, after ditching the disabled squad car, Alvarado forcefully took a USPS truck from a postal worker. He then sped away, heading northbound on Roberts Road, where he slammed into a vehicle carrying a mother and her two children, ages 4 and 7.
Emergency responders rushed the children to a nearby hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, and Alvarado is expected to face additional charges as the case develops. The shocking nature of the incident has left many in the community shaken, as law enforcement works to ensure justice is served.
