Shocking Scandal: 20 L.A. County Probation Officers Indicted Over Juvenile Hall Violence

At least 20 probation officers in Los Angeles County are facing criminal charges after an investigation by the California Attorney General’s office into serious misconduct at the county’s troubled juvenile halls. Two law enforcement sources confirmed the news, calling it one of the most significant scandals to hit the department in years.

The union representing these officers acknowledged that several of its members had been ordered to appear in criminal court. Meanwhile, defense attorney Tom Yu revealed he’s representing a supervisor who’s been named in the indictment, which involves multiple defendants connected to incidents at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall.

Details of the charges haven’t been released yet, as the indictments remain sealed until the defendants’ first court appearances. However, the investigation began after a shocking video surfaced last year, showing a teenager being brutally beaten by other detainees while several probation officers stood by, watching, laughing, and even shaking hands with the attackers.

The 17-year-old victim suffered serious injuries, including a broken nose, internal damage, severe bruising, and a traumatic brain injury. According to a legal claim he later filed, the teen accused the officers of organizing and encouraging the violent attack.

Reports also allege that a supervisor, Taneha Brooks, may have instigated the fight by labeling the teen as a racist based on his gang affiliations and the neighborhood he came from. The attackers were all Black, while the victim is Latino.

In response to the mounting controversy, the L.A. County probation department placed 14 officers on leave. Vicky Waters, the department’s communications director, emphasized the department’s commitment to accountability and zero tolerance for misconduct.

The scandal is just the latest problem for Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, which has faced years of chaos and mismanagement. The facility, which reopened in 2023 after being closed due to excessive force allegations, has been plagued by violence, staff shortages, and safety issues. It was deemed unsafe for youth earlier this year, yet remains open despite orders to shut down.

Supervisor Janice Hahn expressed outrage over the situation, calling the indictments disturbing and emphasizing the need for a major cultural overhaul within the probation department. As the investigation unfolds, the future of L.A. County’s juvenile facilities remains uncertain, with many calling for urgent reforms to protect the vulnerable youth in their care.
