Kentucky is bracing for more snow as a new winter storm heads its way, adding to the snowy scene that’s been unfolding for days. Central Kentucky is under another Winter Storm Warning this weekend, with the National Weather Service predicting 3 to 6 inches of snow. The first flakes are expected to start falling early Saturday morning, around 4 a.m.
This new storm comes on the heels of last weekend’s icy blast that left much of the state frozen. On January 5, Lexington saw about 7 inches of snow and nearly an inch of ice. The storm knocked out power for over 90,000 people. Crews have been hard at work since then, and as of Thursday afternoon, only about 3,400 customers are still waiting for their power to be restored, according to PowerOutages.us.
Thankfully, this storm is expected to bring only snow and not the dangerous ice that caused so much trouble last weekend. The media reported that this should make the upcoming weather event less severe. As of Thursday afternoon, Governor Andy Beshear had not declared a state of emergency. Meanwhile, Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton is set to hold a news conference Friday morning to prepare residents for the weekend’s weather.
Schools in several areas, including Fayette County, will remain closed through Friday due to the current weather conditions. And while this weekend’s storm might be the main event, there’s more to come—a lighter dusting of snow is expected on Sunday and Monday. Bitterly cold temperatures will follow, with highs next week barely climbing above 34 degrees and lows mostly dipping into the teens.
Stay warm, Kentucky, and get ready to bundle up for another snowy weekend!
