Stephen Colbert never misses a chance to add humor to the day’s biggest events, and President Donald Trump’s second inauguration was no exception. On Monday’s episode of The Late Show, Colbert had plenty of fun poking holes in moments from Trump’s return to office.
One of the key moments? Trump’s failure to place his hand on a stack of Bibles during his swearing-in. Colbert quickly seized on the opportunity, jokingly saying, “When the ceremony was supposed to be outdoors, he was going to touch the Bible, but once it got moved inside, the fire marshal didn’t allow it.”
“But hold on,” Colbert continued. “If he didn’t touch the Bible, can we really call him president?”
Then, in true Colbert fashion, he turned up the humor even more. “I mean, who did touch the Bible? Melania. Does that mean she’s the president now?” he quipped, before adding with a smile, “Could the hat be president? It definitely seems to have strong opinions about borders.”
Colbert’s clever mix of humor and political commentary had the audience laughing while making a fun point about the oddities of the ceremony.
