New Zealand’s High Seismic Activity

New Zealand lies on the eastern margin of the Australian tectonic plate, one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. This is because of the constant movement and collision between the Australian and Pacific plates.

Since 1900, around 15 earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 or higher have occurred near New Zealand. Some of the strongest ones were recorded near the Macquarie Ridge, including an 8.2 magnitude quake in 1989.

The largest earthquake ever recorded on land in New Zealand was the 7.8 magnitude Hawke’s Bay earthquake in 1931, which caused widespread destruction.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are urging residents in coastal areas to stay alert and follow official updates.
