A 15-year-old Massachusetts boy, John P. Sheeran, has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault after an alarming incident where he tried to drown another boy while using racial slurs. This disturbing event took place at a pond when Sheeran and other boys allegedly threw rocks at the victim, a Black teen, and repeatedly pushed him underwater. As the victim gasped for air, he pleaded, “I can’t breathe,” only to be mocked with the cruel words, “George Floyd.”
The victim, who couldn’t swim, was wearing a lifejacket to stay safe but was still harassed by the boys, who taunted and tried to rip the jacket off while laughing. It wasn’t until a bystander stepped in and helped the victim that the assault finally stopped.
In court, Sheeran was charged as a “youthful offender,” meaning he could be sentenced either as a juvenile or as an adult. His sentencing is set for February 5. A second boy is also facing charges but has not been named.
Sheeran’s attorney argues the charges are too severe, calling the situation “horseplay that got out of control.” However, the judge has the final say and may impose a tougher sentence if she disagrees with the plea deal.
This case serves as a powerful reminder of the serious consequences of bullying, especially when it’s fueled by hate. Let’s hope for justice and healing for all involved.
