A little girl in Omaha had quite a scare on Monday afternoon, but thankfully, she’s now safe and sound. It all started around 1 p.m. near 72nd and Spring Streets when someone stole a car with a three-year-old girl sitting in the backseat.
The car’s owner immediately called the police, reporting that their little daughter was inside the vehicle when it was taken. Omaha Police quickly jumped into action. Officers from all over, including undercover units and even officers from nearby areas, joined the search. Sgt. Matt Chandler described the situation as one of the most serious calls an officer can get, especially when an innocent child is involved.
The search was intense, with officers scouring the area, but the car and the suspect initially got away. Hours later, the stolen car was found abandoned near 60th and Spring Streets. To everyone’s relief, the little girl was still in the backseat and unharmed.
Police are still searching for the person who took the car, and the investigation is ongoing.
Sgt. Chandler used the incident as a reminder to the community about car safety, especially in cold weather. He advised against leaving cars running, even for a moment, as it only takes seconds for something like this to happen.
This frightening incident had a happy ending, but it’s a good lesson to stay vigilant and take precautions to prevent such situations. If you have any information about the suspect, you’re encouraged to contact Omaha Police.
