According to staff at various Bourbon Street bars and restaurants, foot traffic has significantly decreased, with many tourists now hesitant to visit the location of the attack. This hesitation is beginning to spread to less-crowded areas of the Quarter, such as the French Market, where vendors are noticing a decline in visitors as well.
Braxton Humphrey, a vendor at World Famous Nawlins, expressed concern about the current state of tourism and the impact on local businesses. He emphasized the efforts being made to return to normalcy but noted that the city is still dealing with the repercussions of the attack. “We’re hard at work, trying to get back to normal business,” Humphrey said. He added that New Orleans, a city facing emotional and economic challenges, is in need of support and encouragement from visitors.
Humphrey, who had previously witnessed a surge in business thanks to the crowds drawn by Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour last fall, had seen his business nearly recover to pre-pandemic levels. However, the recent events have caused him to question the stability of the recovery. “A lot of people are down and just searching for hope,” he said, reflecting the somber mood that has settled over the city.
