Texas Woman’s Shocking Crime: A Deadly Secret, a Burning Truck, and a Kayak Escape

A Texas woman is facing serious charges after police say she killed her common-law husband, set his truck on fire, and then tried to escape in a kayak. Faith Paige Goynes, 40, is currently in custody at the Calhoun County Adult Detention Center following her arrest on December 23.

The investigation began when authorities in Bandera County found Tomas Calavera Jr., 30, dead in his home during a welfare check. Calavera, Goynes’ common-law husband, was discovered in a closet with a gunshot wound to his face, according to an arrest affidavit. The welfare check was requested by officials in Calhoun County, who were already looking into Goynes’ involvement in a related incident.

Things started to unravel when Calhoun County deputies found a 2024 GMC pickup truck, owned by Calavera, engulfed in flames near Port O’Connor, about 150 miles east of San Antonio. A witness reported seeing a woman walking away from the burning vehicle, trying to put out flames on herself. Nearby, investigators found a gas can and a lighter, which added to their suspicions.

Soon after, deputies and a Texas Parks and Wildlife officer discovered Goynes attempting to paddle away in a kayak. She had visible burns on her hands and was carrying Calavera’s identification card. The affidavit states that Goynes admitted to shooting Calavera and setting his truck on fire.

The couple shared a child, and their relationship appears to have taken a tragic and violent turn. Goynes is now charged with murder in Bexar County, where Calavera’s home is located, as well as arson causing serious injury or death. As of now, there is no information available about her bond.

This shocking case has left two counties investigating the tragic events, and Goynes is set to face the legal consequences of her actions.
