According to Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr., Wilson died after being punched in the chest multiple times during his pledge to the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Caleb McCray was arrested Thursday evening and now faces serious charges, including manslaughter and criminal hazing. His attorney insists McCray is innocent and has asked the public not to rush to judgment until all the facts are known.
Wilson’s death happened under deeply troubling circumstances. A group of men took him to the hospital, claiming he had collapsed while playing basketball. But police later discovered that Wilson had actually been injured at a warehouse during the hazing ritual. Even more disturbing, no one called 911, and the group left the hospital before authorities arrived.
Hazing is no small matter in Louisiana. Under the Max Gruver Act — named after a Louisiana State University student who died in a hazing-related incident in 2017 — those involved in hazing that leads to death or serious injury face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Organizations like Omega Psi Phi could also face civil penalties.
Southern University has taken swift action. The campus chapter of Omega Psi Phi has been suspended, and students found responsible for Wilson’s death could be expelled. The university has also halted all Greek life organizations from accepting new members for the rest of the academic year.
As the investigation continues, the Southern University community is mourning the loss of a bright and talented young man. Wilson was a mechanical engineering junior and played trumpet in the university’s renowned Human Jukebox marching band, which recently performed at the Super Bowl. Hundreds gathered at a vigil to remember him, sharing stories about his joy, drive, and dedication.
