In Oildale, California, a mother named Chantelia Johnson is upset and wants answers after an incident involving her daughter at Wingland Elementary School. She claims that a staff member at the school yanked her daughter’s arm during a fire drill, and she’s now demanding action.
Chantelia says the school called her about what happened. They explained that during a fire drill, her daughter was asked to leave the classroom and grab her jacket. According to the school, when her daughter didn’t immediately comply, a teacher took the jacket from her. But what Chantelia heard later made her even more concerned.
A post on Facebook, written by someone who claims to have seen what happened, painted a different picture. The post alleged that a staff member not only took the jacket but also grabbed the student’s arm in an aggressive manner and threw the jacket on the floor. Chantelia reached out to the person behind the post, who shared their perspective with her.
“I didn’t know the person who posted about it on Facebook, but we connected, and she told me she saw my daughter being assaulted,” Chantelia shared. “I want to protect my child. She was hurt, and I believe charges need to be filed.”
The situation has drawn attention from both the school district and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Dr. Jocelyn Hively, the Superintendent of Standard School District, addressed the incident in a statement. She explained that during fire drills, staff follow procedures to ensure students leave the classroom quickly and safely. Dr. Hively acknowledged that in this case, a student had paused during the evacuation and needed prompting to move along. She described the incident as a misunderstanding that had been blown out of proportion.
Chantelia was later shown a video of the incident by school staff. After seeing it, she decided to file a report with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies investigated and later shared their findings. They reported that the situation stemmed from a disturbance between Chantelia and school staff over the jacket incident. After looking into it, they concluded that no crime had been committed.
For now, the incident continues to spark conversations, especially online, where the Facebook post first brought attention to the matter. Chantelia, however, remains firm in her belief that her daughter was wronged and is determined to seek justice.
