It all began when a couple driving along County Road 267 in Alabama hit a deer and had to pull over. The remote location left them with poor cellphone service, making it impossible to call for help. At that moment, Bart Cauthen, who owned property nearby and happened to be passing through on his way home to Georgia, noticed the stranded couple and decided to stop and assist.
Cauthen, along with the male driver, decided to walk to a nearby home for help. What happened next was both unexpected and devastating. The homeowner, 33-year-old William Randall Franklin, allegedly opened fire without warning as the two men approached his property. A gunfight broke out when the driver, who was armed, returned fire.
Tragically, Bart Cauthen was struck by a fatal shot and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and Franklin were also injured in the exchange of gunfire and were rushed to different trauma centers.
