In a heartfelt message to the families of victims and the entire New Orleans community, President Joe Biden expressed his deep sorrow following the horrific New Year’s Day attack in the French Quarter.
“To the families who lost loved ones, to those recovering in hospitals, and to the grieving people of New Orleans, I want you to know the nation grieves with you,” Biden said. His words came as the city mourns the loss of 15 lives in an unthinkable act of violence.
A Heartbreaking Incident Shocks the Nation
Early on New Year’s Day, a driver plowed through a crowded area spanning three blocks before stopping, stepping out, and opening fire on innocent bystanders. Law enforcement eventually stopped the attacker in a dramatic shootout, but not before 10 people were killed and 35 others injured.
Those hurt in the attack are now receiving care at local hospitals, as the community comes to terms with the devastating events.
“The soul of our city has been crushed by evil on our doorstep,” said one New Orleans resident, capturing the heartbreak felt by many.
A Presidential Call for Unity and Patience
Biden reassured the public, emphasizing that investigators are working tirelessly to uncover every detail behind the attack.
“Let me be clear: no one should jump to conclusions,” he said during an evening address. “Law enforcement and intelligence teams are digging into every angle—connections, associations, and possible co-conspirators. I’ve directed my attorney general, the FBI, and top national security leaders to stay on this until we have all the answers.”
He also promised transparency: “As soon as we have confirmed information, I will share it with the American people.”
FBI Leads Terror Investigation
Authorities have labeled the attack as an act of terrorism, with the FBI taking the lead in the investigation. New Orleans Police Chief Patrick Ferguson confirmed that “the act was clearly intentional.”
In a separate written statement, Biden commended the swift action of local law enforcement, who likely prevented an even greater loss of life.
“I’ve been in constant communication with federal law enforcement, Homeland Security, and the Mayor of New Orleans since early this morning,” the President shared. “Every resource is being made available to get to the bottom of what happened and ensure there’s no remaining threat.”
What’s Next for New Orleans?
While the investigation continues, New Orleans is leaning on its resilience. In the face of such tragedy, the community is determined to stand together and heal.
As President Biden put it, “Our hearts are with the people of New Orleans.”
