A California fire captain was found dead in her home on Monday night, prompting an investigation into what authorities believe may be a domestic violence-related incident. Rebecca Marodi, 49, a captain with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), was discovered with multiple stab wounds at her residence in Ramona on the night of February 17. Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office had responded to a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon. Despite efforts by first responders to save her life, Marodi was pronounced dead at the scene.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office stated that investigators believe Marodi knew her attacker, though no suspects have been publicly identified at this time. Authorities are continuing their search for answers as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Marodi had a long and dedicated career with Cal Fire, serving for over 30 years, primarily in Riverside County. She began as a volunteer firefighter in 1993 and steadily moved up the ranks, earning a promotion to captain in 2022. Colleagues described her as deeply committed to her work, always prioritizing the well-being of those she worked with. A statement from Cal Fire emphasized her lasting impact on the department, noting that her legacy of mentorship and service will continue to be felt for years.
Neighbors who knew Marodi expressed their shock at the tragic incident. Monika Evans, a neighbor, said that she had never noticed anything unusual about Marodi’s home life. She recalled seeing Marodi engaging in regular activities such as mowing the lawn and gardening, never witnessing any signs of trouble. Evans also described her as outgoing, kind, and having a good sense of humor.
On Tuesday morning, Cal Fire crews honored Marodi with a solemn procession from her home to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities are urging anyone with information about her death to contact the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330 or, for after-hours calls, at (858) 868-3200.
