A woman lost her life in a three-vehicle crash in Onslow County on Sunday, according to the Jacksonville Police Department. Authorities responded to the scene at approximately 1:22 p.m. at the intersection of Piney Green Road and Country Club Road.
An initial investigation determined that a gray Nissan SUV, driven by Mari Woodland, entered the intersection while the traffic light in her direction was red. The first vehicle was a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Michael Caswell, and the second was a gray Honda Pilot, driven by Ashton Gardner.
Emergency medical services transported Woodland to a local hospital for treatment, but she later succumbed to her injuries. The Jacksonville Police Department has stated that they are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
No additional details have been released regarding possible contributing factors such as speed, impairment, or weather conditions. Authorities have not reported any serious injuries for the other drivers involved. Law enforcement officials urge drivers to remain cautious at intersections and follow all traffic signals to help prevent similar accidents.
Residents in the area have expressed concerns about traffic safety at the intersection where the crash occurred, though officials have not indicated whether any structural changes or additional traffic control measures are being considered.
