An investigation is currently underway following a double fatal accident in Jones County early Sunday morning. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. near Dover on Highway 70 at mile marker 392.
Authorities report that a Honda Civic was traveling in the wrong direction, heading west in the eastbound lanes at what appeared to be a normal rate of speed. At the same time, a Dodge Hornet, driven by 37-year-old Satisha Ward, was traveling in the correct direction on the same stretch of highway. The two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in a devastating crash.
Prior to the accident, a trooper from New Bern had been alerted to the Honda Civic traveling the wrong way and attempted to intervene. However, the trooper was unable to reach the location in time to prevent the collision.
Officials say that upon impact, both vehicles caught fire. Tragically, both drivers died at the scene before emergency responders could render aid.
Due to the extent of the fire damage, authorities will rely on DNA or dental records to positively identify the driver of the Honda Civic. The North Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
