Trump Slammed by Wall Street Journal for Allegedly Backing Political Violence: ‘A Rotten Message from a President’

On his first day back in office, former President Donald Trump made a bold and controversial move by granting pardons to those involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. These individuals were convicted after participating in violent protests aimed at overturning the 2020 presidential election results.

Trump’s decision to commute the sentences of these convicted rioters—many of whom had violently clashed with law enforcement and disrupted the peaceful transition of power—has sparked intense debate. Critics, like The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board, were quick to condemn the move, calling it “a rotten message about political violence” and a “bait and switch.”

The Editorial Board didn’t mince words, pointing out that the riot was already a stain on Trump’s legacy. By pardoning the people responsible for beating police officers and creating chaos, Trump, in their eyes, added another serious blemish to his record.

When Trump was asked about the insurrectionists in November 2024, his response seemed cautious. He mentioned he would review cases individually, suggesting that not everyone involved in the attack would receive a pardon.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking just days before Trump’s return to office, echoed similar sentiments. On Fox News, Vance argued that anyone who “peacefully protested” on January 6 and was treated unfairly by the justice system should be pardoned. However, he was clear that those who resorted to violence that day should not be granted forgiveness. Vance even spoke of a “gray area” surrounding the incident.

But let’s be honest—when it comes to individuals like Kelly Meggs and Stewart Rhodes, there’s no gray area to be found. These two were convicted for planning to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power and were linked to other violent groups. They came prepared to cause harm and even had firearms with them. There’s no question that their actions were violent, and it’s hard to see how they could fall into any “gray area.”

In the end, Trump’s pardons seem to send a clear message. Despite claims of considering the facts on a case-by-case basis, his actions appear to ignore the severity of the violence that took place on January 6. It’s a decision that raises important questions about accountability and the consequences of political violence.
