In Carrollton, Georgia, police have charged Staci Cook, the former executive director of CASA Carroll County, with theft by taking. This case involves allegations of stealing funds from a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for foster children.
Detective Brandon Wilson from the Carrollton Police Department explained that Cook allegedly used CASA’s Venmo account to take donations meant for the nonprofit. Instead of keeping the money for the organization, she’s accused of transferring it to her personal Venmo account and later moving it into her bank account.
The investigation began after an audit by CASA Carroll County revealed unusual spending. During the audit, the organization discovered extra paychecks had been issued to Cook, which raised red flags.
According to the police, at least $7,000 is believed to have been misappropriated so far, but the investigation is still ongoing, and more details could emerge.
Kylie Carroll, the Chair of CASA Carroll County, released a statement emphasizing the organization’s commitment to moving forward positively. She stated that Staci Cook is no longer employed with CASA and shared confidence in their newly appointed executive director. The organization remains focused on its mission of helping foster children in the community.
This incident has drawn attention to the importance of transparency and accountability in nonprofit organizations. The investigation by the Carrollton Police Department continues as they work to uncover the full extent of the alleged theft.
