Union County Crash Leaves 4 Vehicles Wrecked, Driver Cited on I-57

A four-vehicle crash occurred on Monday morning, February 10, on northbound Interstate 57 in Union County, Illinois. The incident took place near mile marker 32, north of Illinois Route 146, at approximately 8:35 a.m. According to the Illinois State Police, the crash involved a 2011 gray Nissan Maxima, a 2017 gray Nissan Murano, a 2012 gray Nissan Altima, and a 2020 gray Freightliner semi-truck.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that Brandon Bierstedt, 50, from Anna, Illinois, was driving the Nissan Maxima northbound in a construction zone. As he approached the Nissan Murano, driven by a 33-year-old woman from Anna, Bierstedt struck the rear of the Murano. The impact caused the Murano to collide with the back of a Nissan Altima, which in turn pushed the Altima into the rear of a semi-truck.

The collision caused the Nissan Murano to leave the roadway, coming to a stop in the center median. The driver of the Murano and her passenger, a 56-year-old woman, were both transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Fortunately, the drivers of the Nissan Altima and the Freightliner semi truck did not report any injuries.

Following the crash, Bierstedt was cited by state police for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Fortunately, despite the multi-vehicle nature of the incident, the injuries were not severe. The investigation into the crash continues, and authorities have reminded drivers to remain cautious in construction zones and adjust their speed accordingly to avoid accidents.
