Authorities in the Dominican Republic are searching for 20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki, a college student from Virginia, who went missing while on spring break. Konanki, a student at the University of Pittsburgh, was last seen early Thursday morning walking along the beach in Punta Cana, a popular resort destination.
Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman stated that Konanki was on vacation with five college friends. It remains unclear whether she was swept into the ocean or if foul play was involved. Investigators are exploring all possibilities regarding her disappearance. Chapman emphasized that no assumptions can be made at this point, and officials are keeping all options open while the search continues.
Konanki’s parents have traveled to the Dominican Republic to assist in the search efforts. A family friend described them as devastated and desperate to find their daughter. Authorities confirmed that search operations will resume on Monday morning.
The University of Pittsburgh has also been in contact with Konanki’s family and local officials. A university spokesperson expressed concern for her safety and assured that they are offering full support in efforts to locate her and bring her home.
Sheriff Chapman explained that his office is working closely with Dominican authorities, as well as the FBI, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Indian embassy. He urged travelers to stay informed about potential risks and ensure that someone is always aware of their whereabouts while abroad.
Officials remain hopeful that Konanki will be found. Chapman reiterated that the case is being taken very seriously, especially given that she is a resident of Loudoun County. He expressed the community’s concern and commitment to finding her safe.
The U.S. State Department currently has a Level 2 travel advisory in place for the Dominican Republic due to concerns over crime, including armed robbery, homicide, and sexual assault. Travelers are advised to exercise increased caution and remain vigilant about their surroundings. Authorities continue their efforts in the search, urging anyone with information to come forward.
