Authorities in Caldwell, Idaho, have arrested a man for burglary after he admitted to using a creative theft scheme at a Walmart store. The Caldwell Police Department reports that 32-year-old Dylan Rockwell was taken into custody following an incident on Sunday night at a Walmart located on Cleveland Boulevard.
According to police, Rockwell was caught using a ring with a barcode for tomato soup to scan large items at checkout. This trick allowed him to bypass the register system and pay a much lower price for more expensive goods. During the theft, Rockwell stole a grill valued at $300, among other items.
When officers arrived at the Walmart, they were informed that the suspect had already left the store. However, they were able to track Rockwell’s vehicle and locate him at his residence. Police detained him at his home and recovered the stolen merchandise.
During questioning, Rockwell confessed to committing multiple thefts from Walmart using the same method. He explained that he had been using the barcode ring to scan larger items, such as grills, while the register charged him for less expensive products.
In a statement following the arrest, Caldwell Police Chief Rex Ingram commented on the unusual nature of Rockwell’s theft tactics. “Sorry Mr. Rockwell, your tactics didn’t work this time, but we appreciate your creativity. We know that times are tough, but your ingenuity got you some county soup for dinner,” Ingram quipped.
Rockwell now faces charges related to burglary and theft, and the investigation continues as authorities review his previous actions. This incident serves as a reminder of how creative and resourceful some criminals can be in attempting to steal from businesses.
