The House Ethics Committee is now looking into Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) over concerns about his 2022 loan to his campaign committee. It’s been reported that this loan might have violated some House ethics rules, and the Office of Congressional Ethics is recommending an investigation.
So, what’s the deal? Well, Ogles, who just won re-election, reportedly loaned $320,000 to his own campaign. But here’s the catch—his financial disclosure report didn’t show he had the money. In fact, he claimed he didn’t even have a checking or savings account. That raised some eyebrows about how he could afford to loan such a large sum to his own campaign.

The Plot Thickens:
Things got even more interesting in January 2024, when the Campaign Legal Center compared Ogles to the controversial former Rep. George Santos (R-NY). They filed a complaint with the ethics office, accusing Ogles of misrepresenting his finances and not properly reporting his personal loans. The issue was serious enough that Ogles had to amend his campaign paperwork in May, admitting he didn’t actually loan the $320,000 to his campaign after all.
But that’s not all. Ogles made other changes to his financial reports, retracting claims about thousands of dollars in campaign contributions and spending that didn’t match up with what was originally reported to the Federal Election Commission.
The FBI Gets Involved:
By August, things took another turn when the FBI searched Ogles’ electronic devices as part of an investigation. While the details of the search remain unclear, it’s evident that the scrutiny is serious.
Then came the shocking revelation from the Local Tennessee Lookout: Ogles had claimed to raise $2 million for his campaign but had spent $1.4 million. According to financial reports, he should have around $600,000 left in his campaign account, but the actual balance was only about $300,000, with another $300,000 seemingly unaccounted for.
Campaign Legal Center counsel, Danielle Coulter, summed it up perfectly in November 2023, asking the big question: “Where did this money come from? It’s still unclear based on his financial disclosures.”
Stay tuned as this investigation continues to unfold—there’s certainly more to the story.
