Severe winter weather is sweeping through parts of the United States, as winter storm warnings have been issued across three states: California, Nevada, and Alaska. The National Weather Service (NWS) has raised alarms for these regions, forecasting heavy snowfall, gusty winds, and hazardous driving conditions that could make travel difficult or even impossible in certain areas.
In California, snow accumulation of up to 20 inches is expected in some parts, particularly in areas like the eastern Mojave Desert and the San Bernardino Mountains. The NWS has warned drivers that conditions could make travel “very difficult to impossible” at times, with hazardous bridges and overpasses becoming slick. Residents in areas like Riverside County and the San Gabriel Mountains should brace for up to 14 inches of snow and winds up to 35 mph. California Highway Patrol has already shared footage of drivers carefully navigating snow-covered roads, including the I-5.
Nevada’s southern Clark County is also under a winter storm warning, with icy and snow-covered roads expected to impact travel, especially on Nipton Road. The NWS has urged drivers to plan ahead for hazardous conditions until Monday evening.
In Alaska, up to 20 inches of snow are forecast for Thompson Pass, accompanied by gusty winds reaching 60 mph. The NWS has issued warnings for several regions in Alaska, including the upper Kuskokwim Valley and parts of the Brooks Range, with blowing snow reducing visibility to near-zero conditions at times.
The NWS advises those traveling in these areas to prepare for extremely dangerous conditions, and those on the road should carry extra supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case of an emergency. Residents are encouraged to stay updated with local weather forecasts and heed any warnings issued by authorities.
