A Baltimore woman who was hit by an Amazon delivery truck in an alleged hit-and-run last month says she’s not holding any grudges against the driver. Chelsey Douglas, 29, was seriously injured when the truck struck her on the night of February 18 at a crosswalk near E. Pratt St. and S. Chester St. The whole thing was caught on a neighbor’s doorbell camera.
Despite what happened, Douglas has forgiven the driver, saying she believes they only fled because they panicked. Her attorney, David Ellin, told TMZ that while her recovery will be long and difficult, she’s not angry with the person behind the wheel.
The driver, 26-year-old Jerome Young from Baltimore County, turned himself in two days after the incident and is facing charges of reckless and negligent driving. After the accident, Amazon suspended Young, and later confirmed he’s no longer making deliveries for the company.
Neighbors in the area expressed their concerns about how fast cars often speed through the streets. Aidan Shawyer, who lives nearby, said it’s common to see drivers blowing through traffic lights and speeding down residential roads.
Douglas has since been released from the hospital but faces a tough road ahead. A GoFundMe campaign set up by her friend Rene Cardona has already raised over $18,000 toward its $50,000 goal. The money will help cover Douglas’ medical bills and support her during the months she’ll be unable to work.
As the Baltimore City Police Department continues its investigation, the community has rallied around Douglas, showing their support and kindness in the aftermath of this terrifying incident.
