Christmas Tragedy: Speeding Driver Kills One, Injures Two in Las Vegas Crash

In Las Vegas, a 20-year-old man has been ordered to stay behind bars with bail set at $500,000 after a tragic crash on Christmas morning. The incident, which happened just after midnight on December 25, took place on Maryland Parkway near Sahara Avenue. It left one man dead and two others injured.

The driver, Giraldo Salas-Chacon, is facing serious charges, including driving under the influence and reckless driving, both leading to death. According to prosecutors, Salas-Chacon was speeding at a shocking 105 mph—75 mph over the speed limit—when the crash occurred. Police say he was uncooperative when they arrived at the scene.

During a court hearing on Thursday, prosecutors emphasized the danger posed by Salas-Chacon’s actions. Judge Suzan Baucum agreed, addressing him through an interpreter. She pointed out that being underage and drinking alcohol, combined with speeding, showed a blatant disregard for the law and the safety of others. She then ordered him to be held at the Clark County Detention Center.

The man who lost his life in the crash was found beyond help when emergency crews arrived, according to Metro police. Salas-Chacon suffered only minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, where officers noted signs of impairment.

A public defender representing Salas-Chacon argued that he has strong ties to the community, with family living locally and no prior criminal record. Family members were present in court to show their support for him.

Salas-Chacon is set to appear in court again on December 31 as the case moves forward.
