End of an Era: Greenville Police Chief Announces Retirement After 28 Years

Greenville, N.C. – After 28 years with the Greenville Police Department, Chief Ted Sauls, Jr. has announced his retirement, effective April 1st. Chief Sauls shared his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the city and work alongside dedicated officers throughout his career. He expressed appreciation for the relationships he has built and stated that while he has loved his work, he looks forward to spending more time with his family, which he has sacrificed due to the demands of the job. He remains confident that the department is in a strong position and will continue to thrive.

Chief Sauls began his career with the Greenville Police Department in 1997 as an intern in the Property and Evidence Division. Over the years, he served in various capacities, including patrol, investigations, training, and as the Emergency Response Team Commander. His leadership and commitment to the community have been widely recognized.

Chief Sauls was appointed as Greenville’s police chief in November 2022, following the resignation of former Chief Mark Holtzman, who had led the department since 2015.

His retirement announcement follows that of Jacksonville’s Police Chief Mike Yaniero, who also announced on Friday that he will be stepping down in April. Chief Sauls’ departure marks a significant transition for the Greenville Police Department, but city officials remain confident in the department’s ability to continue serving the community effectively.
