Big changes are happening in the world of journalism! The Atlantic, known for its sharp political reporting, has scooped up two major talents from The Washington Post: Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer, both senior political reporters. This bold move signals The Atlantic’s commitment to top-tier political coverage, especially with Donald Trump heading back to the White House.
Laurene Powell Jobs, owner of The Atlantic and widow of Steve Jobs, personally played a role in recruiting these seasoned reporters. Meanwhile, things at The Washington Post have been rocky. Owner Jeff Bezos has reportedly declined to back Kamala Harris publicly, clashing with his editorial team. Plus, the newsroom is still on the hunt for a permanent editor-in-chief.
Under the leadership of editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic is thriving. Earlier this year, the magazine hit a major milestone—crossing one million subscribers and turning profitable. Now, they’re on a hiring spree, planning to add a dozen new journalists to bolster their political coverage.
“We’re all about accountability journalism,” Goldberg shared. “We want the best team to hold the incoming administration to task.”
The Atlantic already has 350 employees and recently brought on another Post star, Shane Harris, to cover national security.
In contrast, The Washington Post has seen a wave of high-profile departures, including Matea Gold and former editor Sally Buzbee. With all these changes, The Atlantic is setting itself up as the go-to source for sharp, fearless political reporting.
Stay tuned—this is just the beginning of their exciting journey!
