In a surprising twist, some former Democrats are standing by their decision to vote against Vice President Kamala Harris and even support Donald Trump. Their main reason? Frustration with President Biden’s handling of the Gaza war and their belief that the Democratic Party has lost touch with communities they claim to represent.
Layla Elabed, sister of Rep. Rashida Tlaib, shared her thoughts: “Harris chose the path of big donors over working families. Trump, on the other hand, showed up when people were grieving. Sure, his promises might be empty, but at least he was there.”
Bryarr Misner, who managed the “Abandon Harris” campaign in Pittsburgh, admitted voting for Trump, saying it was about sending a message. “We wanted to punish the Democrats for supporting what we see as genocide in Gaza. Trump may not deliver, but he listened.”
Farah Khan, a Michigan leader and lifelong Democrat, said switching sides wasn’t easy, but it felt necessary. “The Democrats haven’t changed. Trump, at least, talked to the Muslim community and promised peace. That’s what people wanted to hear.”
However, some are uneasy. Trump’s choice of Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel and Tulsi Gabbard for DNI has raised concerns. “It’s worrisome,” Khan admitted. “But we’ll have to wait and see. Trump only listens to Trump.”
For these voters, it’s about hope, frustration, and seeing who actually steps up for their communities. Will their gamble pay off? Time will tell.
