Get ready for a wet and windy week, San Diego! Rain is making a comeback, and it’s going to stick around for a while. Starting early Tuesday, showers will sweep across the county and keep popping in and out through Saturday. We’ll get a short break on Wednesday, but the heaviest downpour is expected Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, mountain areas like the Santa Ana and San Diego County Mountains could see 1 to 1.5 inches of rain. Coastal and valley regions are looking at about half an inch to three-quarters of an inch, while the desert areas may only get around one-tenth to half an inch.
And if you’re hoping for some snow, you’re in luck! Snow levels will start pretty high at around 6,000 to 6,500 feet on Wednesday, but they’ll drop to about 3,500 to 4,000 feet by Thursday afternoon.
Temperatures are also taking a dip. Downtown San Diego will hover in the lower 60s on Tuesday and Wednesday, dropping to the upper 50s by Thursday and Friday. In the deserts, expect highs between the low 60s and mid-70s, while the mountains will stay chilly in the 40s all week.
Surfers, take note — some serious swells are on the way. On Tuesday, expect waves between 4 to 6 feet, with occasional sets reaching up to 8 feet. There’s also a chance of thunderstorms and strong rip currents, so be cautious if you’re heading out to the water. Similar surf conditions are expected Thursday and Friday.
Boaters should prepare for rough seas, too. A small craft advisory will be in effect from 4 a.m. to at least 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Winds could gust over 20 knots Wednesday night into Friday, and there’s even a 60% chance of gusts hitting 34 knots offshore on Thursday evening.
The rain might linger into Saturday, and there’s a chance of yet another storm system rolling in early next week. So keep those umbrellas handy, and stay safe out there!
