A school bus carrying 31 passengers overturned in Montvale, New Jersey, on Monday evening, resulting in injuries to multiple individuals and hospitalizing at least 13 people. The accident occurred on the side of the Garden State Parkway (GSP) near milepost 170.5, according to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.
Preliminary investigations by the New Jersey State Police indicate that the bus was operated by 44-year-old Joseph Itzkowitz from Lakewood, New Jersey. While traveling northbound on the parkway, the bus veered off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
The driver sustained moderate injuries, while one juvenile passenger suffered serious injuries. Thirteen other juvenile passengers sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. No fatalities have been reported.
Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali confirmed in a Facebook post that all passengers survived the crash. He also stated that the bus had been traveling from Lakewood, New Jersey, to New York State when it overturned near Exit 172 around 7:30 p.m. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to provide medical assistance and transport injured passengers to the hospital.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No further details have been released regarding potential factors that may have contributed to the incident.
