A homeless man has been arrested in Elizabeth City after allegedly firing shots into an apartment while a mother and her two children were inside. The incident took place on Monday, March 10th, at the Walkers Landing Apartments, located in the 400 building of the complex. According to the Elizabeth City Police Department, officers responded to a call about shots fired at approximately 5 p.m.
Upon arriving at the scene, investigators found that the apartment had been struck by gunfire while the mother and her children were present. Fortunately, no one inside the apartment was injured. However, the shooting raised significant concerns about the safety of the residents in the area.
Police quickly launched an investigation and were able to locate and arrest 21-year-old Rontrez Coleman, who attempted to flee the scene. Authorities say Coleman’s last known address was listed as homeless. He was charged with multiple offenses, including Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling, Damage to Property, and Shooting within the City Limits.
After his arrest, Coleman was transported to the Albemarle District Jail, where he is being held without bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for today in the Pasquotank County District Court.
